My name is Engr. Wilcox Onyemekeihia. I am 31 years old and a Nigerian business and social entrepreneur. I have a passion for renewable energy as a poverty eradication and employment promotion intervention. This conviction began my interest to concentrate my 2011/2012 study on the “Optimization of Photovoltaic energy with a system that can be used to feed the excess energy generated into the national power grid” in partial fulfilment of the requirements to obtain a double degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering at the University of Port Harcourt, Nigeria.
Later in 2018, having also acquired additional skills in Database and Software programming, I co-founded a renewable energy start-up ‘PhOZ Renewable Energy Ltd registered in Nigeria (RC: 2585890) http://www.phozenergy.com/ as my contribution to the achievement of the UN SDGs by 2030 goal 7 “Affordable and Clean Energy” in Nigeria and Africa as a whole – leveraging the African Continental Free Trade Area.
I and my company have personally generated over 1MW since PhOZ renewable energy resources was created. I setup a Pay-As-you-Go system where Nigerians pay as little as 10% upfront for a full-time installation. We are cheap, efficient and affordable.
I have created over 1,000 Jobs directly and Indirectly, also contributing to ease of doing business especially for Startups.
There is still more to be done and can be done, given the current statistics in Nigeria with barely less than 50% of Nigerians on the National grid and only 3000MW of electricity in distribution. Also with the level of poverty and unemployment, in a 200million population, the government is subsidizing 90% of the distributed electricity, part of which is keep the Nigerian budget in deficit year-on-year. Consequently, ending poverty and promoting prosperity will continue to evade Nigeria and its peoples.
